Homosexuality

Homosexuality is becoming more and more accepted in both our society and around the world as an alternate lifestyle. Many people are accepting and embracing homosexuality as a way of life in the hope of being tolerant toward all people. The issue of homosexual behavior can often bring conflict and hostility because it deals with a lifestyle and a belief system that can impact all of life. Through Scripture, God is clear when He calls homosexual activity a sin. This can be seen in both the Old and New Testaments (Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:26-27).God designed marriage to be between one man and one woman. This is seen in the creation account found in Genesis 1-2. God created man and then allowed man to realize his need for a partner. God then created woman as a complement to man. In giving the law sometime later, God instructs the Israelites to not participate in homosexual activity as other nations were practicing (Genesis 19). “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination” (Lev 18:22).Homosexual desires are not natural desires. Paul explains in the first chapter of Romans that man knew God but chose not to honor God and exchanged the truth for a lie. As a result men “abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error” (Romans 1:27). Notice it is not natural for a man to desire a man.Homosexual activity is sin. “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God” (1Co 6:9-10). God is clear when He says that it is a sin or an abomination.Homosexual activity is “A” sin. Although Scripture does tell us that it is a sin, it does not give any indication that it is the greatest sin or even a greater sin than other sins. As seen in the above passage, homosexual activity is listed in a number of sins. Any and all sin is offensive to God and whether one participates in homosexual activity or lying, we are all sinners who need God’s forgiveness. Through His forgiveness we can have victory over our sin (I Corinthians 6:11).
