What happens after I die?James 2:26 describes death “the body without the spirit.” Death cannot be described as simply as when someone’s heart stops, or when someone ceases breathing. Modern medical technology has assisted in reviving individuals even after their hearts have stopped or they have stopped breathing. However, this only describes the moment of death, not what happens after death.Scripture is clear about the existence of heaven and hell. People will spend eternity in one of the two depending on whether they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. At the moment of death, people are taken to either heaven or hell. For those who trust Christ, Paul explains that to be away from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8, Philippians 1:23). Those who have rejected Jesus will be cast into hell (Luke 16:22-23, Matthew 18:8-9).There is the promise of a new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1), but this does not mean that all people will pass from the temporary place after death into this new heaven and new earth. There will be a point when unbelievers will be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). Both places will be for eternity (Matthew 25:46), and the eternal state of man is determined by whether Christ Jesus alone has been accepted for salvation from their sins.
